#LocalGuidesChallenge October Results Are Out!

Hello hello! Finally, the results of the Google Local Guides Challenge is already out! You will see the top 6 above (yes, a sixth city was able to make it to the top list), without our home city Dubai sadly. But actually, that's ok! I haven't really shared the awesome experience I had with 70 plus people who attended the meet, have I not? So here it is!

A few weeks back, I asked everyone's help to get our home city Dubai to into the top list of cities contributing photos and reviews on Google maps - I shared it all here.

To our surprise, 115 plus registered and 70 plus attended with over 20 different nationalities - what a huge group! We initially started with 53 at the meet up point and more people joined during the photowalk.

Preparations

If you have been following our journey on Instagram, Carl and Salman helped organise this photo walk. We also had the Igers Dubai community invite instagrammers to participate - that's why the group grew this big.

The goal of the #LocalGuidesDubai Instameet is to welcome new people in the active Instagram community and to encourage them to participate with community meets like this. We aimed to get the community be involved in becoming a Local Guide – to post as many photos and reviews of places and facilities in our city (Dubai) on Google Maps so we can be included in the top 5 cities in the Local Guides Challenge initiated by Google.

And since we have pushed this well enough on our social networks, our mini-walk was also supported by our friends from the Dubai Tourism, they were super generous and gave us several giveaways for us to keep!

Old Dubai Photo Walk Route

Our route was summarised in this video made by Anjo Mercado of  @talesandwaves. We gathered the group in front of Al Ras Metro Station (Green Line) – Gold Souq Exit 2 and this is where we had our group photo taken.

Our walk was divided in two parts: first part was Deira creek side where we passed by Heritage House/Ahmadiya School moving towards Choitram so we can reach the Gold Souq. From Gold Souq, we went towards Spice Souq and met at the Abra station to cross the creek.

The second part was from the Abra Station infront of Bank of Baroda towards Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood (formerly known as Al Bastakiya). The points of interests that we have visited are the pathways of Bur Dubai Souq towards Grand Mosque, Creekside Café area, Dubai Museum,  Arabian Tea House Café, Coffee Museum, Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood and finally met at XVA Gallery to chill and relax.

The Results

Over 300 photos were produced on Instagram and hundreds of photos on Google maps, try to search for #localguidesdubai and you will see the beautiful creations of our community! We even got featured on several channels like Khaleej Times and #MyDubai Instagram page, amazing!

We might have missed it to the top list but one thing is for sure - a small community of Local Guides in Dubai has been born. We aim to grow this family so we can later on meet more people and encourage them show the beauty of our city the way we, the residents, see it - share ideas, and be recognised by Google Local Guides team so we too can get invites to their epic events or who knows, be on the next Google Local Guides Summit!

Oh and by the way, we are cooking up another meet-up on Dec. 2 or 3. Please do follow our social channels through #localguidesdubai to keep you updated on our next meets. For now, let me share with you my faves from the IG meet held previously. See you around Dubai!
